Brief Report on SOSUG #6

SOSUG #6 was held last night in North Sydney with about 23 attendees and Beer and Pizza courtesy of James.

We had both Bill Moore and Jeff Bonwick from team ZFS as guests and I must say they put on a great presentation.

I certainly picked up on a few things that I now need to read some more about. The one that interests me most is how easy it was to wrte a very small directory replicator using zfs send and zfs receive on differences of snapshots (say every 10 seconds or so).

Brendan asked the question about zfs on media like cdrom to be able to verify the end-to-end data consistancy of such media. This was a great opening for Bill as apparantly he has done a putback into nevada in the last few weeks that would actually facilitate this. Imagine being able to know that your media has a problem before you finish installing it.

Bill and Jeff managed to talk for close to three hours (and none of us realised how long the presentation had gone on until about 10pm!). After this Brendan gave us a little background on teh new Solaris Internals books; how it turned into two volumes and what we can expect to see. I for one am really looking forward to getting my hands on these. Apparantly the release time frame is somewhere during June.

In spite of my knowing better (with my long trip home from North Sydney), a few of us adjourned to a local pub for a few more drinks afterwards with Jeff and Bill. A good time was had by all.

On walking back to North Sydney Railway station, we discovered that the North Shore trains were out and we had buses. I managed to get into Hornsby about 10 minutes after the midnight train left, so had to wait until 1:00am for the next, getting home at about 2:20am. It really wasn’t worth going to sleep before the 3:00am con-call, so I managed to get to bed about 4:00am, to be woken by my kids about 7:30. Oh well, it’s about 11:30am now and I think I’m part of this world again. It was definitely worth it though to get to meet and interact with these incredibly talented and interesting people. Bill and Jeff, I hope you and your families enjoyed your trip down and take back some good memories.

Postscript

I’ve had a number of requests for videoing and webcasting these meetings for those who can’t make it. I’d like nothing better, but we currently have neither the facilities, nor the time. When we videod Bryan’s visit, it took us a few weeks to get the video organised as none of us really does this very much.

PostPostscript

I’ve uploaded some photos to flickr from last night. I’ve also added them to the Open Solaris Enthusiast Pool.

Update

Fixed Bill’s blog url.
